Uruguay Parliament declares December 11 as Carlos Gardel's birth anniversary
The Uruguayan Parliament has unanimously approved a bill declaring December 11 as the Day of the Birth of Carlos Gardel. The legislation recognizes the legendary singer as Uruguayan, citing official state documentation that records his birth in the department of Tacuarembó on December 11, 1887.
The two-article project, which now moves to the Executive Branch for promulgation, also declares all commemorative activities regarding Gardel's birth anniversary to be of national cultural interest.
Senator Robert Silva noted that the initiative is backed by over 60 years of research and historical documents, including a death certificate from 1935 that lists the artist as born in Uruguay and naturalized in Argentina. Silva emphasized that the law does not seek to dismiss Gardel's career in Buenos Aires, but rather to honor his documented origins.
