Uruguay Parliament moves to declare December 11 as Carlos Gardel's Birthday
The Uruguayan Chamber of Representatives has unanimously approved a bill to designate December 11 as the ‘Carlos Gardel Birthday’. The legislation, which received support from all 82 deputies present, now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
The bill contains two primary articles: the first establishes December 11 as the official birthday of the singer-songwriter in recognition of state documentation recording his birth in the department of Tacuarembó on December 11, 1887. The second article declares all commemorative activities regarding his birthday within Uruguay to be of cultural interest.
Representative Gustavo Guerrero stated the bill aims to recognize the heritage and identity value Gardel represents for the Río de la Plata region. The initiative follows the 2025 discovery of a document in the Historical Diplomatic Archive of Uruguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which provides definitive evidence of his birth in Tacuarembó.
