Uruguay political deadlock over judicial appointments
Negotiations in the Uruguayan Parliament regarding the renewal of key oversight bodies have stalled due to disagreements between the ruling coalition and the opposition. The dispute centers on whether the renewal of the Attorney General's Office (Fiscalía) should be included in the current negotiations alongside the Court of Accounts and the Electoral Court.
Senator Daniel Caggiani of the Frente Amplio stated that an agreement is unlikely this week, noting that the National and Colorado parties oppose changes to Mónica Ferrero, who is currently serving as acting Court Prosecutor. Meanwhile, Frente Amplio president Fernando Pereira has called for Ferrero to step down, arguing she lacks the necessary political consensus for the role.
While President Yamandú Orsi has suggested that renewing the Attorney General's Office is not as urgent as the other two bodies, the Frente Amplio maintains that a permanent authority must be designated to resolve ongoing institutional uncertainty.
