Uruguay President Orsi highlights Ferrocarril Central logistics

Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi highlighted the logistical contributions of the Ferrocarril Central during its second anniversary of operation. The rail line connects Paso de los Toros with the Port of Montevideo, covering a 265-kilometer corridor through several departments including Tacuarembó, Durazno, Florida, Canelones, and Montevideo.

Since August 2024, the railway has completed approximately 5,000 trips, transporting 8 million tons of goods, including 7 million tons of cellulose and 1 million tons of production inputs. The operation has scaled from four monthly trains to nearly 300 per month. Starting in February 2025, 100% of the cellulose produced at the UPM plant in Paso de los Toros will be transported via this rail line to the specialized terminal at the Port of Montevideo.

The project involved a $1.2 billion investment and the installation of 343 kilometers of new tracks. The infrastructure was built to modern standards with a capacity to transport up to 4 million tons annually and supported over 3,500 direct jobs, with more than 90% of the workforce being Uruguayan.
