Uruguay proposes stricter firearm and ammunition controls

The Uruguayan Ministry of the Interior has submitted a decree to President Yamandú Orsi aimed at tightening controls on civilian firearms and ammunition. While the general limit of eight weapons per person remains, the proposal introduces a maximum of four short or handguns, specifically limiting users to two pistols.

The new regulations will not affect individuals who already have more weapons legally registered at the time the decree takes effect. Additionally, the text prohibits the import, manufacture, assembly, acquisition, and use of weapons or components produced via digital technologies, including 3D-printed firearms.

To manage ammunition, the proposal introduces two categories for ownership: regular users and intensive users, each with different purchase limits. This measure seeks to address the fact that Uruguay is currently the only Mercosur country without quantitative limits on civilian ammunition purchases. Minister Carlos Negro linked the need for these controls to a 6% increase in homicides during the first half of the year.
