Uruguay seeks stable relations with Brazil following runoff election

Uruguayan officials have expressed a commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with Brazil regardless of the outcome of the upcoming presidential runoff election between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro.

Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin stated that the Mercosur trade bloc will not be fundamentally altered by the election results, noting that the bloc was not a central part of the Brazilian electoral debate. Lubetkin emphasized that Uruguay is prepared to offer full cooperation to the winner to ensure a productive future relationship, stating, “whoever triumphs in the elections will have our full availability to have a great relationship for the future, because Brazil needs it, Uruguay needs it.”

Presidential leadership in Uruguay also underscored the importance of the relationship with Brazil, describing the neighbor as a “giant” that is more than just a country. While acknowledging the tight race in the polls, the administration maintained that diplomatic relations should be viewed through the lens of state-to-state connections that persist despite changes in leadership.
