Uruguay seeks to deepen strategic ties and Mercosur-India trade talks
Uruguay is seeking to accelerate economic and strategic ties with India, with Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin pushing for the commencement of negotiations between India and the Mercosur trade bloc. Currently holding the Mercosur presidency, Uruguay aims to use its tenure to advance these discussions, emphasizing a pragmatic approach to expand trade and business opportunities.
The push for deeper engagement follows a meeting in Rio de Janeiro between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi, during which Modi reportedly outlined a ten-year vision for bilateral relations. Uruguay attended the BRICS summit in New Delhi as an outreach invitee to explore these expanding connections.
Beyond trade and investment, the two nations are working on a roadmap for cooperation in culture, tourism, and geopolitical issues. Recent developments include the opening of an Indian embassy in Montevideo and the arrival of a new Indian ambassador, signaling a new stage in the bilateral relationship.
