Uruguay Parliament approves unemployment extensions for various sectors
The Uruguayan Parliament has passed several urgent bills to extend unemployment benefits for workers in key sectors. The Senate approved a special unemployment insurance regime for citrus workers involved in harvesting, packing, and juice production. While Deputy Pablo Constenla supported the citrus measure to prevent delays, he criticized the 90-day coverage limit, calling for an additional 90-day extension to better protect families in the Salto region.
Additionally, the Senate approved extensions for workers at two meatpacking plants. For Frigorífico Rondatel S.A. (Frigorífico Rosario), the extension covers over one hundred workers until December 31, 2026, as the plant gradually increases activity following the lifting of Chinese trade suspensions. The legislature also passed an urgent bill to extend unemployment subsidies for employees of Frigorífico Carrasco S.A.
