Uruguay sentences three men for attempting to cash stolen winery check

Three men have been sentenced in Uruguay for attempting to cash a stolen check following a major robbery at the Roses winery in Canelones. The robbery involved the theft of 30 million pesos (approximately 747,000 USD) and various third-party checks after thieves disabled alarms, covered security cameras, and broke into two safes.

The individuals were apprehended at a Banco República branch in the La Unión neighborhood of Montevideo while attempting to cash a check worth 400,000 pesos. Bank officials grew suspicious during a withdrawal attempt, reviewed the account movements, and alerted the police.

Two of the men, aged 26 and 43, were sentenced to 12 months of effective imprisonment for receiving stolen goods and fraud. A third man, aged 39, received 10 months of probation for receiving stolen goods. These sentences pertain specifically to the attempted check cashing and not the original winery robbery.
