Uruguay strengthens human rights protections and historical memory

The Uruguayan Presidency’s Secretariat of Human Rights has taken significant steps to advance human rights and historical memory. The Secretariat signed an agreement with the Uruguayan Press Association (APU) to promote freedom of expression, press freedom, and access to public information. This partnership includes joint initiatives such as seminars, workshops, and training for journalists to combat hate speech and disinformation.

Additionally, the Secretariat has transferred documentation regarding the dictatorship and disappeared persons to the Institute for the Investigation of Detained-Disappeared Persons (Inddhh). This transfer complies with obligations set by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and national law. The move aims to support investigations by the justice system, specialized prosecutors, and academic researchers, ensuring the preservation of historical memory and the pursuit of truth and justice.
