Uruguay to ban sport duck hunting starting in 2027
The Uruguayan government has issued a decree to suspend sport duck hunting starting in 2027. This measure ends permits for the three species previously authorized for hunting: the white-faced duck, the maize duck, and the blue-winged teal.
The Ministry of Environment stated that the decision is part of the state's responsibility to protect wildlife and preserve ecosystem balance. Technical analyses conducted by the National Directorate of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (Dinabise) indicated that habitat loss and hunting pressure pose risks to these populations. Current data does not support the conclusion that sport hunting can be conducted sustainably.
Minister of Environment Edgardo Ortuño noted that the decision follows scientific evidence and dialogue with civil society organizations. The Ministry will continue conducting field studies to better understand species distribution, population trends, and reproductive rates to strengthen conservation efforts.
