Uruguay to host Mercosur ministers and addresses ICC obligations

Uruguay will host an informal meeting of Mercosur foreign ministers on September 2 in Montevideo. The gathering, held under Uruguay's Pro Tempore Presidency, will include ministers from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. Following the meeting, Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin is scheduled to hold a press conference.

Separately, Uruguayan diplomatic officials have addressed the legal implications regarding a potential visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Undersecretary of Foreign Relations Valeria Csukasi and Foreign Minister Lubetkin stated that Uruguay would fulfill its international commitments to the International Criminal Court (ICC). Lubetkin emphasized that if the ICC maintains its arrest warrant, Uruguay would proceed with the capture, comparing the obligation to how the state would handle other individuals subject to ICC resolutions.

While officials framed the stance as a matter of international legal compliance, legal discussions have emerged regarding the principle of sovereign immunity for heads of state under international law.
