Argentina SME retail sales fall 3.8% in July
SME retail sales in Argentina fell 3.8% year-on-year in July, according to data from the Argentine Confederation of Medium-Sized Enterprises (CAME). This represents a 2.1% decline compared to June. For the first seven months of the year, accumulated retail sales have decreased by 2.7%.
The decline in consumption has sparked a debate between CAME and Mercado Libre founder Marcos Galperin. While Galperin noted that his platform saw 38% growth in constant currency, CAME representatives argued that e-commerce figures do not reflect the consumption of essential goods like bread, milk, or meat, which are primarily purchased through local neighborhood shops.
In the construction sector, shipments of materials to the domestic market dropped 6.5% year-on-year in July and 0.8% compared to June. The Construya Index shows that cumulative sales for the first seven months of the year are down 0.6%. Industry representatives suggest these declines may be transitory and hope for a recovery if macroeconomic conditions and interest rates improve.
