Uruguayan business leaders and government coordinate employment initiatives
Business leaders in Maldonado and Punta del Este have committed to offering job opportunities to individuals transitioning out of homelessness. This commitment follows the announcement of a new strategy by Uruguay’s Ministry of Social Development (Mides), which includes the ‘Habitar, Convivir y Producir’ program, extended shelter access, and housing support.
A follow-up committee will be established to identify specific labor market training needs. Individuals who complete the Mides care process and meet required profiles will be eligible for employment in private companies. Business representatives noted that addressing homelessness is also a priority for maintaining order in public spaces, which is vital for the local tourism sector.
Separately, the national government has extended the ‘Uruguay Impulsa’ program through November. In Río Negro, local authorities have decided to use independent resources to fund the program for 171 participants until the end of January. While the program provides essential training and temporary income, questions remain regarding the long-term transition of participants into stable, permanent employment once government funding concludes.
