Uruguayan departmental councilors raise environmental and payroll concerns

In the Durazno Department council, Frente Amplio councilor Conrado Torena warned that uncontrolled activities are degrading the native riverine forest. He cited illegal logging, sand dredging and contamination from leachates, and presented six measures to protect the area, including creating a guard crew, using technology for monitoring, expanding protected‑area status and establishing a park‑ranger training program.

In the Paysandú Department council, Frente Amplio councilor Natalia Martínez accused two senior officials of receiving salaries at a grade‑12 level despite being entitled to grade‑8 pay. She cited a public‑information request showing the discrepancy and argued that the payments violate the departmental budget and the Junta’s decisions.
