Uruguayan forestry producers call for regulatory agility and political engagement

During the Uruforest 2026 regional forum in Juan Lacaze, Colonia, forestry industry leaders emphasized the need for better alignment between the sector and political authorities to ensure economic development.

Diego Carrau, forestry manager at Montes del Plata, urged political leaders, including President Yamandú Orsi, to recognize the sector as a primary economic driver. Carrau addressed long-standing myths regarding industrial plantations, stating that 90% of the area is certified by international organizations and refuting claims that eucalyptus plantations destroy biodiversity or dry out soil.

Carrau also warned that while regulations are necessary for improvement, they must be backed by scientific evidence and remain agile. He noted that excessive bureaucratic delays in ministry filings can demotivate small producers, leading them to abandon forestry for other types of production.

Nelson Ledesma, representing the Sociedad de Productores Forestales (SPF), noted that while the sector has gained efficiency over the last 40 years, further steps are required to improve global competitiveness and export capacity. He highlighted the industry's role in generating employment, foreign exchange, and state revenue.
