Uruguayan political advisor sentenced for money laundering and drug trafficking

Pablo Leiva, a paid advisor to National Party councilman Gonzalo Gómez, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison for money laundering and the internal trafficking of ammunition. The conviction follows 'Operación Trazador,' an investigation conducted by the General Directorate for the Repression of Illicit Drug Trafficking.

The operation, which included raids in Brazo Oriental and Pérez Castellanos, resulted in the seizure of over 265 kilograms of drugs, including cocaine and cocaine paste, valued at approximately US$2 million. Authorities also confiscated nearly US$3 million, US$42,564, five vehicles, and various firearms and ammunition.

Following the conviction, Gonzalo Gómez, who serves on the National Party Directorate, announced that he has terminated his professional relationship with Leiva. Minister of the Interior Carlos Negro described the operation as a significant blow to criminal organizations operating in Montevideo.
