Uruguayan Senate Commission approves bill for travel expense accountability
The Senate Finance Commission in Uruguay has approved a bill that mandates stricter accountability for travel expenses (viáticos) among senators, deputies, and political appointees at departmental and municipal levels.
Under the proposed law, officials must submit a sworn declaration of expenses and confirm the completion of assigned tasks within ten business days of returning from a domestic or international mission. Any surplus funds must be returned. Failure to comply will result in the total amount of the per diem being deducted from the official's subsequent salary. For honorary officials, records of non-compliance will be forwarded to their appointing authorities. Additionally, those who fail to report within the deadline will be barred from future travel assignments.
The initiative also requires legislators to provide detailed reports for activities partially or fully funded by foreign states or international organizations. These reports must be submitted to the presidency of their respective chambers within ten business days and must include details regarding the invitation, the host, and all covered costs, such as airfare, lodging, meals, and any other economic benefits received.
