Uruguay's Frente Amplio Threatened by Rise of Extreme Centrism

Sociologist Gustavo Garcés warns that Uruguay’s ruling Frente Amplio coalition is being undermined by a new wave of “extreme centrism.” He argues that parties abandoning ideological roots to chase centrist voters risk collapsing both the parties and the democratic system.

Commentator Federico Fasano Mertens cites his own November 2024 video, in which he predicted the danger of pragmatic, ideologically‑neutral politics before the Frente Amplio’s recent electoral victory. Both authors contend that genuine ideological commitment, rather than opportunistic pragmatism, is essential for a healthy democracy in Uruguay.
