Urussanga marks 42 years since Mina Santana mining tragedy

The municipality of Urussanga, Santa Catarina, is observing an official day of mourning to mark the 42nd anniversary of the Mina Santana tragedy. On September 10, 1984, a violent explosion caused by the accumulation of methane gas in the Santana community mine killed 31 workers.

The disaster had a profound impact on the region, affecting neighboring municipalities such as Lauro Müller. In response to the tragedy, the local government established an official day of mourning through Municipal Law No. 3.221 to preserve the memory of the victims and their families.

Survivors and local residents continue to recall the event, noting that the accident led to increased demands for improved safety equipment and stricter controls within the mining industry. The community of Santana, which grew around the coal mining sector, remains deeply connected to the history of the accident.
