US 250th anniversary spotlights religious heritage and literacy

The United States is marking its 250th year of independence with renewed attention to the religious foundations of the nation. Studies cited by the American Bible Society and Pew Research show that less than half of Americans have read much of the Bible and many cannot answer basic biblical questions, raising concerns that religious illiteracy undermines understanding of the country's historical roots.

At the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., the new one‑person play “A General’s Prayer” runs through July 19, portraying George Washington’s private faith and doubts during the Valley Forge winter. Actor James Denton uses Washington’s letters, speeches and documented prayers to depict the commander’s reliance on “Providence” amid supply shortages and the challenges of leading the Continental Army. The production reflects broader public interest in the spiritual dimension of America’s founding as the nation celebrates its quarter‑century milestone.
