US 2nd Circuit Denies Trump's Bid to Stay E. Jean Carroll Defamation Ruling

Former President Donald Trump asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit to pause the court’s decision that upheld a jury verdict finding him liable for defaming author E. Jean Carroll. The jury had awarded Carroll $83 million in damages after she alleged Trump sexually assaulted her in a New York department store in the 1990s and that his subsequent denials were defamatory. Trump sought a stay to bring the issue of presidential immunity before the Supreme Court. On April 29, the full 2nd Circuit panel rejected the request, leaving the $83 million judgment in place and allowing Trump to pursue a petition to the Supreme Court if he chooses. The case originated under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for historic sexual‑assault claims.
