Norway's seafood sector hit by US tariffs amid record export growth
The United States introduced a 12.5% tariff on Norwegian goods in July 2026, higher than the 10% rate applied to EU members. Norwegian officials warn that a further tariff of up to 12.5% could be added for "structural overcapacity," potentially bringing the total duty on seafood to 25%.
Industry groups, including the Norwegian Confederation of Business and Trade (NHO) and fish processor Inka, say the higher duty threatens salmon exporters, which rely on the US for about 70% of their sales. The government convened a crisis meeting on 5 August 2026, attended by Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide and Fisheries Minister Marianne Sivertsen Næss, to formulate a response and argue that Norway’s forced‑labour regulations meet EU standards.
Despite the tariff dispute, Norway’s seafood exports reached a record NOK 15.6 billion in July 2026, a 13% increase from the previous year. Salmon drove most of the growth, accounting for 65% of the export value to China, while the United States remained the third‑largest market, though export value fell 4% year‑on‑year. Analysts estimate the US tariff could cut Norway’s share of the US salmon market from roughly 7% to 1%, jeopardising long‑term contracts.
