US tariffs target Colombian, Chilean, Dominican and Peruvian exports

The United States has imposed a 12.5% additional tariff on a range of products exported from Colombia, Chile, the Dominican Republic and Peru. In Colombia the measure, effective from July 24, covers roughly 30% of the country’s 2025 sales to the U.S., valued at about US$4.44 billion, after the USTR cited insufficient safeguards against forced‑labour imports. Chile faces a similar 12.5% duty on many goods, though strategic commodities such as copper and lithium are exempt. The Dominican Republic’s export sectors are also subject to the same rate, with officials framing the action as a push for higher labour‑standards compliance. The tariffs affect key sectors including flowers, aluminium, textiles, plastics and other high‑value products, and are part of a broader U.S. policy that applies 12.5% duties to 60 economies while granting a 10% rate to those deemed to have made progress on forced‑labour controls.
