U.S. administration addresses AI safety and tech visa usage

The U.S. administration is navigating complex tensions between the technology sector and federal policy regarding artificial intelligence safety and immigration.

In the realm of AI, independent third-party evaluators are gaining prominence as companies like Anthropic and OpenAI seek support to assess model risks and capabilities. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have expressed support for embedding these independent evaluators within their operations. While President Donald Trump has supported the concept, questions remain regarding the funding models and reporting structures for these nonprofit evaluators.

Simultaneously, the administration is addressing immigration and labor concerns within the tech industry. Vice President JD Vance announced the suspension of Microsoft from a program allowing the company to apply for green cards for skilled foreign workers via H-1B visas. Vance accused the company of abusing the system, alleging that Microsoft obtained thousands of visas while laying off U.S. workers. Despite these accusations, President Trump honored Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, recognizing his role in the company’s global transformation.
