U.S. considers global stablecoin push to boost dollar and Treasury demand

The Trump administration is reportedly considering a strategic initiative to promote the global use of dollar-backed stablecoins through public-private partnerships. This plan aims to reinforce the U.S. dollar’s status as the primary global reserve currency while simultaneously driving demand for U.S. Treasury securities.

Key federal agencies, including the Treasury Department, the State Department, and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), may participate in these ventures. The initiative follows the enactment of the GENIUS Act in July 2025, which established a regulatory framework requiring stablecoin issuers to back their tokens with high-quality reserves, such as cash or short-term Treasury bills.

Currently, stablecoin providers hold nearly $200 billion in U.S. government debt. By expanding the international footprint of dollar-pegged digital assets, Washington seeks to ensure that foreign digital payment rails remain anchored to the dollar. This move comes as rival nations, including China, explore similar digital currency strategies to boost their own international influence.
