U.S. administration lifts export controls on advanced AI models
The United States government announced that it has removed export‑control restrictions on several high‑performance artificial‑intelligence models developed by Anthropic and OpenAI. A June 26 letter from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick indicated that the Trump administration is satisfied with Anthropic’s cooperation in addressing security risks tied to the Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5 models, and therefore will restore access for U.S. cyber‑security firms. The same letter confirmed that OpenAI has also complied with Washington’s demand to limit distribution of its new GPT‑5.6 model to a vetted partner group.
Earlier in June, the administration had abruptly ordered Anthropic to block access to the two Claude models after vulnerabilities were identified that could potentially be exploited to bypass cyber‑security safeguards. The recent policy reversal signals a shift toward a more permissive stance, provided the companies continue to mitigate identified risks.
