US administration partners with tech giants to monitor AI's impact on jobs

The Trump administration has entered into a data-sharing agreement with major technology companies, including Meta Platforms, Google, Amazon, and OpenAI, to monitor how artificial intelligence affects the United States labor market. Under this deal, tech firms will provide private-sector data to the U.S. Department of Labor to assist the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in tracking AI's impact on hiring and job roles.

Acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling stated that the administration expects AI to lead to job augmentation and the creation of new roles rather than mass unemployment. The initiative also seeks to address declining survey response rates at the BLS, which have hindered the government's ability to accurately assess economic shifts. This follows previous controversies regarding the BLS, including the dismissal of Commissioner Erika McEntarfer.

Separately, Meta Platforms has reached a $17 billion settlement, prompting calls from advocates like Amba Kak for increased regulation of artificial intelligence technologies.
