US administration removes 760,000 ACA enrollees over suspected fraud
Vice President JD Vance and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz announced a major crackdown on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace, citing widespread fraud and unauthorized enrollments. The administration has canceled coverage for approximately 750,000 to 760,000 enrollees, a move officials claim will save taxpayers an estimated $2.2 billion.
Officials stated that the affected group includes individuals who do not meet eligibility requirements and 'phantom people' who do not exist. Additionally, the administration is conducting further eligibility reviews for another 419,000 to 450,000 enrollees. The crackdown specifically targets insurance brokers, with CMS imposing a six-month moratorium on new broker applications and issuing termination notices to hundreds of noncompliant agents suspected of facilitating improper enrollments to earn commissions.
While the administration frames this as a necessary measure to protect taxpayer funds and ensure benefits reach deserving citizens, critics and insurance industry representatives have raised concerns. Some argue the move could leave many low-income Americans without coverage and that a blanket freeze on brokers may harm consumers during open enrollment periods.
