US administration sends loyalty questionnaire to NATO allies
The Trump administration has issued a questionnaire to NATO allies to evaluate their alignment with United States foreign policy. The document seeks to assess whether member states have publicly supported American initiatives, including actions in the Middle East and the Western Hemisphere.
A significant portion of the inquiry focuses on defense spending and procurement. The U.S. is requesting information on whether European nations are purchasing weapons from American contractors and if they oppose ‘Made in Europe’ regulations that restrict contracts with U.S. companies. Additionally, the questionnaire asks if countries have placed restrictions on the use of their military bases by U.S. forces.
Allies have reacted negatively to the move, viewing it as an attempt to use security guarantees as leverage for political and economic subordination. The assessment comes amid tensions regarding differing stances on military actions in Iran and the protectionist policies of the European Union in the defense industry.
