U.S. administration suspends offshore wind projects and pays billions in compensation

The Trump administration has halted several major offshore wind projects along the U.S. East Coast, citing national security concerns. The Department of the Interior reported that wind turbine structures could interfere with military radar systems, creating "clutter" that may impact defense operations.

Key projects affected include Vineyard Wind 1 in Massachusetts, Revolution Wind near Rhode Island and Connecticut, Sunrise Wind, Empire Wind in New York, and Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind in Virginia. These suspensions impact the projected energy supply for approximately 2.5 million homes.

As part of this policy shift, the U.S. government is providing compensation to the German multinational RWE. The payment to RWE is approximately 1.1 billion euros, contributing to a total compensation bill of nearly 3.6 billion euros for canceled wind projects. This move has raised concerns among international investors regarding regulatory stability and the future of renewable energy investment in the United States.
