U.S. Adults Cut Alcohol Use as Consumption Hits Historic Low

A 2025 Gallup poll found that 54% of U.S. adults reported drinking alcohol, the lowest share recorded since the poll began in 1939. The decline in drinking is reflected in the alcohol sector, where a Bloomberg index tracking about 50 major producers shows a loss of roughly $830 billion in market value over the past four years – a 46% drop from the June 2021 peak. Major companies such as Diageo and Pernod Ricard have seen their stock prices fall to multi‑year lows.

Analysts attribute the shift to growing health concerns, the rise of the “sober‑curious” movement, and increasing popularity of non‑alcoholic beverages. Some also point to expanding legal marijuana sales, which may be diverting consumers away from alcohol in states where cannabis is permitted.
