U.S. agencies address AI infrastructure and oversight

Federal agencies are navigating the integration of artificial intelligence into enterprise workflows, focusing on infrastructure, rising compute costs, and the need for enhanced oversight. At a recent Federal Cloud & Data Forum, technology leaders emphasized that as agencies grant AI more autonomy through agentic systems, they must develop adaptable platforms and maintain human accountability.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is addressing these challenges by developing a shared software platform. Rather than building individual applications, NIAID aims to create a common environment that connects AI with existing databases and workflows to speed delivery and prevent technological obsolescence.

Additionally, experts noted that increased AI usage is driving higher demand for computing power, which may impact how cloud and software vendors price services and could lead agencies to reconsider local infrastructure to manage unpredictable spending.
