Anthropic blocks large-scale AI distillation attempts by Chinese firms
Anthropic has reported blocking large-scale 'model distillation' campaigns by several Chinese AI companies. Distillation is a technique where a smaller model is trained using the outputs of a larger, more capable 'teacher' model. Anthropic identified seven China-based research labs attempting to extract reasoning capabilities from its Claude models to train competing systems.
Specific allegations include Alibaba-linked accounts conducting over 151 million exchanges with Claude, with peak activity reaching 3 million requests per day. Moonshot AI is accused of forwarding approximately 300,000 customer requests to Claude over a ten-day period, presenting Claude's responses as its own Kimi model outputs. DeepSeek was also noted for a single-day spike of over 12 million exchanges.
In a joint cybersecurity advisory, the FBI, NSA, and CISA warned that China-based firms, including Alibaba, DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, MiniMax, StepFun, and Z. AI, are engaging in industrial-scale distillation against US frontier models like Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok. US authorities suggest these companies use various methods, including fake accounts and proxy services, to obscure their origins.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has dismissed these allegations as 'groundless accusations,' arguing that the US is using technical processes as a pretext to suppress Chinese AI development and maintain technological dominance.
