U.S. Air Force accelerates B-21 Raider and F-47 development
The U.S. Air Force is advancing several next-generation aviation programs, including the development of the B-21 Raider stealth bomber and the F-47 sixth-generation fighter. Officials report that the development of both aircraft is running ahead of schedule, aided by digital engineering and a $4.5 billion funding boost from a 2025 reconciliation bill. The first operational B-21 is expected to enter service in 2027, with a planned annual production rate of seven aircraft. The F-47 is scheduled for its first flight in 2028, with plans to acquire 185 fighters.
As an alternative or supplement to the B-21, the USAF has unveiled plans to test a prototype vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) bomber for long-range strike missions. This concept utilizes a liquid-fuel rocket engine to allow for vertical take-off and high-speed mission execution. New Frontier Aerospace is expected to submit a proposal for this program with its hypersonic 'Pathfinder' aircraft.
While newer platforms are accelerating, the Air Force is also modernizing its existing B-52H Stratofortress fleet with new engines, radars, and communications systems to remain in service until at least 2050.
