US Air Force AWACS aircraft declares emergency near Strait of Hormuz

A United States Air Force Boeing E-3B Sentry AWACS aircraft declared a general emergency while flying over the Arabian Peninsula near the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz on August 20, 2026. The aircraft activated emergency code 7700, descending from an altitude of over 6,700 meters to approximately 5,400 meters before moving westward toward mainland territory.

Following the emergency signal, the aircraft's flight data disappeared from public tracking sites, leading to widespread speculation regarding its status. While some social media reports suggested the aircraft might have been intercepted by Iranian air defenses, open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysis noted that the aircraft maintained a stable flight profile and altitude prior to the signal loss, which does not align with the characteristics of a projectile strike.

Simultaneously, three US Boeing KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling tankers were operating in the airspace near the United Arab Emirates and the Strait of Hormuz, having departed from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
