US Air Force considers resuming F-16 purchases with new F-16G variant

The United States Air Force is considering resuming F-16 acquisitions by fiscal year 2027, potentially ending a 22-year hiatus in purchasing the aircraft. This move aims to address critical fleet shortages and the aging of current models, as the F-35A has not entirely replaced the Cold War-era fleet due to high costs and limited acquisition numbers.

The proposed new variant, informally known as the F-16G, would be based on the latest Block 70 standard. Key technical enhancements are expected to include increased operational range and versatility through the addition of approximately 2,270-liter wing tanks and fuselage-conforming fuel tanks. These upgrades are designed to support long-distance operations, particularly in the Pacific theater.

Technologically, the F-16G may feature advanced radar systems, potentially derived from the F-35’s AN/APG-85, providing superior sensor coverage and electronic warfare capabilities. Such upgrades would offer a significant leap in performance compared to the existing F-16C/D models.
