US Air Force extends B-2 and B-1B lifespans ahead of B-21 Raider rollout

The United States Air Force is extending the operational lifespan of its B-2 Spirit and B-1B Lancer fleets to ensure a seamless transition to the B-21 Raider stealth bomber. This strategy aims to maintain aircraft availability and the readiness of the nuclear triad during the multi-year integration process.

To support this transition, the Air Force has launched the North Star Readiness Campaign, which focuses on increasing the number of mission-ready B-1B and B-52 aircraft through enhanced depot maintenance. Additionally, the military is conducting integrated testing that combines technical specifications with operational combat simulations. This allows experienced B-1B and B-2 pilots to provide early feedback to identify potential shortcomings before the Raider enters active service.

Progress on the B-21 program continues with the incorporation of a second test aircraft at Edwards Air Force Base in California. This second unit allows for an increased testing tempo, enabling more comprehensive evaluations of mission systems, software, and maintenance procedures. The Air Force intends to acquire at least 100 B-21 units, with the first expected to arrive at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota by 2027.
