US Air Force increases B-52 bomber availability by 40%

The United States Air Force has increased the number of operationally available B-52 Stratofortress bombers by nearly 40% as part of a new readiness campaign. This move comes as the Air Force Global Strike Command seeks to restore the availability of key bomber platforms amid pressure to maintain long-range strike capacity for global operations.

Delays in the B-21 program and limited numbers of newer aircraft have forced a continued reliance on the aging, Vietnam War-era B-52 fleet. Currently, 76 B-52H aircraft remain in service, though modernization efforts for the B-52J standard have faced rising costs and delays.

To project power and maintain strategic deterrence, the U.S. utilizes Bomber Task Force (BTF) operations. These involve the dynamic deployment of strategic bombers to forward locations outside the continental United States, including regions such as Europe, the Indo-Pacific, and the Middle East, to demonstrate resolve and build alliances.
