U.S. Air Force launches $17M SATCOM upgrade for B-52 bombers
The U.S. Air Force has launched a $17 million competitive program to enhance the protected satellite communications (SATCOM) of the B-52 Stratofortress bomber. This initiative aims to strengthen secure global command links necessary for both conventional and nuclear missions, particularly in environments where communication networks may be contested or disrupted.
The project focuses on developing approaches to integrate upgraded Extremely High Frequency (EHF) satellite communications. This modernization is part of a broader effort to ensure the B-52 remains operational through the 2050s, supporting its role in strategic deterrence and global strike capabilities.
To foster competition and technical flexibility, the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center has awarded separate Other Transaction Agreements to three industry teams: Magee Technologies LLC, Northrop Grumman, and Sierra Nevada Corporation. These groups will develop parallel approaches to allow the Air Force to compare technical maturity, integration risks, and implementation options before selecting a solution for series production.
