US Air Force moves forward with collaborative combat aircraft production

Anduril Industries rolled out the YFQ-44A autonomous combat aircraft at its Arsenal‑1 facility in Pickaway County, Ohio, on July 28, 2026. The YFQ-44A is the United States Air Force’s first fielded Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), designed to operate alongside manned fighters and capable of launching an AIM‑120 medium‑range air‑to‑air missile in a beyond‑line‑of‑sight strike.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems announced that it has begun large‑scale production of the FQ‑42A, another CCA variant, after receiving a contract from the U.S. Air Force on June 17, 2026. The move shifts the semi‑autonomous, modular aircraft from development to operational preparation, aiming to shorten the time between prototype validation and delivery. Both manufacturers are part of a broader CCA program that seeks to field intelligent unmanned wingmen to extend reach, reduce risk to pilots, and increase combat effectiveness.

The parallel rollouts underscore a strategic shift in U.S. aerial warfare toward integrated manned‑unmanned teams, with two suppliers competing to deliver autonomous wingman capabilities for air‑to‑air, strike, and intelligence missions.
