U.S. Air Force repositions F-16s in South Korea
The U.S. Air Force is repositioning F-16 Fighting Falcons within South Korea to redistribute combat airpower and enhance operational flexibility. As part of a broader restructuring of the Seventh Air Force’s F-16 force, aircraft are being moved from Osan Air Base to Kunsan Air Base.
This relocation follows a year-long ‘Super Squadron’ experiment at Osan, which tested whether concentrated fighter formations could improve maintenance, logistics, and sortie generation. By returning F-16s to Kunsan, the service aims to restore fighter capacity at a key forward operating location, strengthen the 8th Fighter Wing, and reduce reliance on a single base during potential crises. The move is intended to reinforce the combined U.S.-Republic of Korea defense posture and sustain the ‘Fight Tonight’ mission.
