U.S. Air Force tests C-130J aircraft in Arctic conditions

The U.S. Air Force is conducting the ‘Northern Viking 26’ exercise in Iceland to test the capabilities of C-130J Super Hercules military transport aircraft in Arctic conditions. The training, which runs from August 22 to September 3, 2026, aims to ensure NATO forces can remain supplied even if conventional airbases are disrupted or unavailable.

Members of the 37th Airlift Squadron, deployed from Ramstein Air Base in Germany, are practicing tactical maneuvers including landings on beaches and grass strips, precision resupply, low-altitude flight, and personnel recovery. These exercises focus on maintaining mobility and logistics in environments with limited infrastructure and severe weather.

The mission highlights the increasing strategic importance of the High North as military activity from the U.S. and Russia intensifies in the region. The training is designed to prove that the C-130J can support dispersed forces in contested or austere environments.
