US Air Force to use AI for Minuteman III missile maintenance

The United States Air Force plans to deploy an artificial intelligence agent to manage the maintenance of its aging Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). The AI system is designed to synchronize and consolidate data from approximately 60 disparate sources, including technical blueprints, maintenance logs, and various network drives, into a single unified dashboard.

This modernization effort aims to reduce labor-intensive manual data analysis and provide technicians with near-instant access to critical information. By streamlining the process, the Air Force hopes to more efficiently determine when parts require replacement, thereby extending the operational lifespan of the 400-missile fleet. This initiative is considered urgent due to delays in the LGM-35A Sentinel replacement project.

While the Air Force previously attempted to digitize maintenance processes through a 2021 partnership with Sabel Systems, earlier efforts to establish a centralized digital environment faced various obstacles. Despite the integration of AI for maintenance logistics, human commanders will retain exclusive authority over all missile launch operations.
