U.S. airlines dominate global aviation revenue rankings
A ranking of the world's 25 largest public airlines by annual revenue highlights the dominance of the United States aviation market. American companies hold the top three positions: Delta Air Lines leads with $68.3 billion, followed by United Airlines at $62.9 billion, and American Airlines at $56.0 billion. Other significant U.S. players include Southwest, Alaska, and JetBlue.
In Europe, Lufthansa leads with $47.1 billion in revenue. Other major groups include International Consolidated Airlines ($39.1 billion), formed from Iberia and British Airways, and Air France-KLM ($36.0 billion). In the low-cost sector, Ryanair leads Europe with $18.2 billion.
Parallel to these revenue trends, there is a significant shift toward premium travel. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom noted that just 30% of the company's seats generate half of its total revenue. To capitalize on this demand and offset rising fuel costs, American Airlines is reconfiguring aircraft, such as its Boeing 777-300ER, to include more premium suites. Similarly, Delta Air Lines plans to increase its premium seat capacity by 8% compared to 2025.
