U.S. alcohol consumption hits record low amid health concerns
Alcohol consumption among Americans has reached its lowest level since Gallup began tracking the metric in 1939. According to recent polling, 54% of adults report consuming alcohol, a figure that has remained steady from the previous year but represents a significant decline from 67% in 2022.
The decline is observed across most demographic groups, with the most notable drops occurring among Republicans and independents, both of which saw decreases of more than 10%. The survey suggests this shift is driven by increased public awareness regarding health risks; over half of Americans now believe alcohol is ‘bad for health,’ up from 26% in 2016.
This trend poses economic challenges for the craft beverage industry. In New York, where the craft beer market is the second-largest in the nation and the wine industry generates significant economic impact, producers are facing a combination of changing consumer habits, rising costs, and distribution disruptions.
