U.S. Ambassador accused of intervening in Lima family evictions

U.S. Ambassador to Peru, Bernie Navarro, is facing criticism following allegations of diplomatic intervention in the eviction of families from land in the Torreblanca sector of Lima. According to reports from the weekly ‘Hildebrandt en sus trece’, Navarro sent a letter to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in March expressing concern over the delayed execution of judicial rulings regarding the property.

The dispute involves land claimed by two American-capital companies, Total Inmuebles SRL and Inmobiliaria Gesmold SRL. While Peruvian courts have ruled in favor of these companies, residents argue they acquired the land through the Jicamarca Peasant Community and possess ownership documents.

Local leaders and evicted residents have reported increased police violence during eviction operations following the ambassador's communication. Some residents claim the intervention bypasses Peruvian institutional sovereignty, while the ambassador's stated position emphasized that a predictable legal environment is essential for investor confidence.
