US Ambassador criticizes European defense procurement strategy

U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, Andrew Puzder, has criticized the ‘Buy European’ initiative, warning that prioritizing domestic arms manufacturing could alienate allies and fragment the transatlantic defense industrial base.

Speaking at the Euronews Defence & Space Summit in Brussels, Puzder argued that military capability and availability should dictate solutions rather than geography. He proposed a ‘Made in NATO’ approach as an alternative to the European-centric strategy, which would allow greater access for American defense companies to European procurement contracts.

The debate arises as EU member states seek to reduce dependence on U.S.-produced weaponry and increase regional defense spending. While some European nations advocate for prioritizing local industry, others have cautioned against excessive protectionism, noting the significant capacity of the American defense sector.
