US Ambassador Fertitta affirms stability in US-Italy relations

U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta stated that military, cultural, economic, and political cooperation between the United States and Italy remains unchanged despite recent friction between leaders. In an interview with La Repubblica, Fertitta addressed recent tensions between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, suggesting that while Trump has high expectations and may express dissatisfaction when they are not met, he continues to view Italy as a global leader.

Fertitta noted that Trump’s criticisms often target major nations he considers important, similar to his interactions with France and Great Britain. Regarding specific policy areas, the ambassador mentioned that while Italy has honored its agreements regarding military bases, the U.S. administration expected more involvement, particularly concerning Iran. Fertitta emphasized that the relationship between Trump and Meloni remains respectful, noting her previous invitations to Mar-a-Lago, and predicted that the two leaders will meet again to maintain bilateral stability.
