US Ambassador Lamelas reaffirms neutrality on Falkland Islands

United States Ambassador to Argentina, Peter Lamelas, has reaffirmed Washington’s position of neutrality regarding the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). In a recent interview, Lamelas dismissed rumors of a policy shift under the Trump administration, stating that the U.S. position remains unchanged.

Lamelas also addressed bilateral military cooperation, noting that while a proposed naval base in Ushuaia is not currently under discussion, the two nations are working closely on other defense matters. This includes assistance for Argentina to incorporate F-16 and P-3 Orion aircraft, as well as Stryker vehicles, and the potential for future collaboration regarding Black Hawk helicopters.

Additionally, the Ambassador made a personal commitment to work toward restoring the Visa Waiver Program for Argentine citizens. He stated that his goal is to ensure Argentines can once again enter the United States without prior visa requirements, a benefit the country held in the 1990s before losing it following the economic and political crises of the early 2000s.
